How to Organise Your Fridge: A Functional Kitchen:

Every parent wants to live in a clean, tidy home, but it can often feel like an uphill battle when raising children. If you’re tired of throwing away out of date produce, struggling to find an item you need, or you want to develop a more visually appealing fridge, you might need to ensure every item has its place. Use Your Shelves Wisely

If you’re dumping items here, there, and everywhere in your fridge, this is a big mistake. Each shelf in your fridge should serve a specific purpose. Follow the below rules of thumb: 

  • Upper shelves – foods that don’t need to be cooked, such as deli meat and leftovers
  • Middle shelves – dairy products, such as milk, cheeses, eggs, etc. 
  • Bottom shelf – raw meat and fish 
  • Drawers – fruit, vegetables, salads, etc. 
  • Door shelves – foods that have natural preservatives, such as juice, jams, condiments, etc. 

If you learn how to organise your fridge, you will be able to find an item you need with ease. You also must encourage your kids and other half to follow the above process. 

Separate Raw and Cooked Meats 

It is essential for the safety of your family to separate raw and cooked meat. Cooked meat should be kept far away from raw meat and fish, which is why it’s advisable to place ready-to-eat items on the upper shelf. By doing so, you will avoid the chance of uncooked meat dripping onto cooked items and causing cross-contamination.

The lower shelf is also the coldest part of the fridge, so the uncooked meat is less likely to go off. However, you must ensure raw meat and fish is covered and sealed to prevent spillages and food contamination. 

Keep Your Eggs on the Middle Shelf 

The NHS has stated that eggs must be kept at a constant temperature to ensure they are safe to eat. It’s for this reason why eggs, along with other dairy products, should be kept on the middle shelf, as they will stay cool and will have well-circulated air. You can, however, place soft cheeses and butter on the door shelf, as they don’t need to be in a cold area of the fridge. 

Don’t Place Fresh Items at the Back of the Fridge 

If you don’t know how to organise your fridge, you might make the mistake of placing fresh foods, such as salads, at the back of the fridge. As the temperature tends to much colder, it could cause the items to freeze and go bad. Keep your food fresh by placing delicate items towards the front of a shelf. 

Keep Select Fruit & Veg Out of the Fridge 

There are some fruit and vegetables that you should never store in a fridge, as they can release gases that can spoil the produce. 

Keep the following items out of the fridge: 

  • Avocados 
  • Bananas 
  • Peaches 
  • Plums 
  • Pears 
  • Tomatoes 

Use Storage Containers 

Improve efficiency in your fridge by investing in different storage containers, which will ensure every item has its place. For example, you could separate meats from fish using different bins, and it will also help you to catch any leaks to make cleaning a doddle and prevent contamination. 

Jars are also a great option for those who want to store berries or chopped fruit and vegetables. Also, if you have many condiments sitting in your fridge, add in a single-tier turntable, which will allow you to store multiple bottles and find one with ease. Don’t forget to label every basket or container you buy, which can help you and your family to quickly find an item.
